Sondheim’s ‘A Little Night Music’ runs May 15-30 at NOVA

by Jaci Webb

The NOVA Center for the Performing Arts production of “A Little Night Music,” which features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, begins Friday and runs through May 30.

Based on a book by Hugh Wheeler and adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s film, “Smiles of a Summer Night,” the musical highlights romance and newly awakened passions.

The charm and wit of this show glide to lovely waltz rhythms, exemplified by the hit song, “Send In The Clowns.” The original Broadway production won several Tony awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

Director Vint Lavinder leads a team of some of Billings’ most popular performers, including musical director Kathy Honaker and choreographer Krista Marshall.

“The character types and age ranges in this play are very specific so there really is no character I could believably play. As I would want to be involved in the production of any Sondheim musical, the next logical step was to direct,” Lavinder said.

Rehearsals began fittingly on Sondheim’s 85th birthday.

The cast includes Sondra Baker as Madame Armfeldt, Christie Arnold as Desiree Armfeldt, Seja Foster as Fredrika Armfeldt, Pat Schindele as Fredrik Egerman, Alli Neyhart as Anne Egerman, Travis Kuehn as Henrik Egerman, Kerry Gruizenga as Charlotte Malcolm, Chae Clearwood as Petra, and Craig Huisenga as Carl-Magnus.

The quintet that observes and comments on the foibles of their employers consists of Kathleen Meyer, Marissa Gretchell, Malia Howell, Gary Treglown and Justin Ward.
